Sheltering in Place

This is the window of the room where I look out at the world,
through the trees, past the small scatter of homes to the lake,
and above it, a sky that wears weather like hats —
something for every occasion.

There is nothing frightening in this view.
The setting sun, a waning flame on the horizon
backed by a smoky scrim, is a theatrical performance
I watch from the safety of my home.

While somewhere else, someone I will likely never know
is watching the same sun rising as they begin their day
of sheltering in, astonished by a sunrise
that performs for their pleasure alone.

  1. So lovely, Mary! I got a little bit ‘chill-bumpy’ when I read this. It exemplifies the fact that we all share a common humanity and how nature has the power to bring out the best in us.

    Bir pencere sarı sıcak

    Amca dese gir içeri

  3. Oh how I love this.
I have often thought about others in a far away place from where I am, looking at the same sun or moon.
    It’s quite miraculous in a way ❤

  4. I enjoy watching the sun rise and set. Each one is a different marvel of nature. Consistent only in it’s rhythm day in and day out. Every one is a little different. How we have changed since 12/31/2020 and how much we still have to grow. Glad you are well, stay there. Peace.
